What we know about Windows 7

This week, Microsoft Corp. went on a 24-hour marketing blitz to talk up the next version of Windows, simply called "Windows 7" for now.

Although some of what Microsoft's executives and spokespeople had to say was how much they weren't going to say and why, a few informational dribs and drabs have worked loose from Redmond.

What, exactly, do we know about Windows 7, the successor to Vista -- the operating system that if not troubled, then at least, as Gartner analyst Michael Silver puts it, carrying " a lot of perception issues"?

Not a lot. Certainly not nearly enough for some of those constituencies thirstiest for details. But here's what we do know, or at least know because Microsoft's said it's so.

When will Windows 7 be released? Depends on who's talking, apparently. Early Tuesday, two Microsoft executives, Chris Flores, a director with the Windows Client communications team, and Steve Sinofsky, the senior vice president who heads Windows development, both pegged the release of the Vista follow-on as early 2010.

"We're happy to report that we're still on track to ship approximately three years after the general availability of Windows Vista," said Flores in an entry on a company blog.

"[We] will continue to say that the next release of Windows, Windows 7, is about three years after the general availability of Windows Vista," Sinofsky told News.com that same morning.

Tuesday night, however, another company executive -- the one who heads the org chart, in fact -- said different. At The Wall Street Journal's All Things Digital conference, Steve Ballmer, Microsoft's CEO, put Windows 7's ship date as "late 2009."

The spread between early 2010, which would be the "three years after the general availability of Vista" -- that operating system went into general distribution at the end of January 2007 -- and "late 2009" may not sound significant, but only a few months separated Vista's actual release from an earlier date that would have meant the operating system made it into computers in time for those PCs to sell during the 2006 holiday season.

What will Windows 7 be like? Under the hood, a lot like Vista, according to the tidbits that Microsoft tossed out this week.

Flores was almost expansive on the subject, and noted that Windows 7 would "carry forward" the "long-term architectural investments" made in Vista. "Windows Vista established a very solid foundation, particularly on subsystems such as graphics, audio, and storage. Windows Server 2008 was built on that foundation and Windows 7 will be as well," he said.

In fact, Sinofsky and Flores confirmed other like-Vista aspects of Windows 7, including the fact that the new operating system will be released in both 32- and 64-bit versions -- there was some speculation earlier that it would be a 64-bit operating system only -- and would, as Flores said, run on the same hardware as recommended for Vista.

Has Microsoft said anything about specific features it plans to ship in Windows 7? A little, but only that. Tuesday night, Microsoft demonstrated a touch-screen feature that the company said would be integrated into Windows 7.

The feature, which incorporates technology Microsoft debuted last year as its Surface project, appears similar to the gesture-based, multitouch tools built into Apple Inc.'s iPhone and MacBook Air, though on the latter the touch is limited to a larger-than-normal trackpad, not the entire screen.

The Ultimate CD and DVD data recovery software! Rescue lost files from a bad or trashed CD or DVD!

Save important documents, precious pictures or video from the family, your only system backup ... IsoBuster can do it all!

One tool, to support all formats, for only one very democratic price. No accumulated cost if you need more than one type media supported.

IsoBuster is a highly specialized yet easy to use CD and DVD data recovery tool. It supports all CD and DVD formats and all common CD and DVD file-systems. Start up IsoBuster, Insert a CD or DVD, select the drive (if not selected already) and let IsoBuster mount the media. IsoBuster immediately shows you all the tracks and sessions located on the media, combined with all file-systems that are present. This way you get easy access, just like explorer, to all the files and folders per file-system. Instead of being limited to one file-system that the OS picks for you, you have access to "the complete picture". Access data from older sessions, access data that your OS (e.g. Windows) does not see or hides from you etc.

Combine this all-revealing functionality with far better read and recovery mechanisms, scanning for lost files functionality, workarounds for a wide range of drive and software bugs, limitations or shortcomings and you have an enormously powerful data recovery tool. IsoBuster is must-have-software for every PC user and is deliberately kept low priced to be able to offer a solution for everybody.

Top Story : Symantec backs off claim, says current Flash Player safe from attack

Symantec Corp. today said that "suspicious behavior" by a captured exploit had led it to mistakenly conclude that the most up-to-date stand-alone versions of Adobe System Inc.'s Flash Player are vulnerable to ongoing attacks from Chinese servers.

But a Symantec researcher said earlier today that Flash Player 9.0.124.0, the currently available version of the popular multimedia player, is not vulnerable to the ongoing attacks. Just yesterday, Ben Greenbaum, a senior research manager in Symantec's security response group, had claimed that while Flash Player 9.0.124.0 plug-ins were safe, stand-alone editions of the program were not.

"All versions of Version 9.0.124.0 on all platforms, plug-ins and stand-alone, are not vulnerable," Greenbaum said today.

The switch was the third change in Symantec's analysis in the past two days.

On Tuesday, Symantec first warned that legitimate Web sites were redirecting unwitting users to one of several Chinese servers, which in turn were trying multiple exploits, including some aimed at Flash Player. Then, Symantec said that older versions of the Adobe software -- version 9.0.115.0, which was replaced in early April -- and the current 9.0.124.0 could be successfully exploited.

Based on that analysis, Symantec dubbed the vulnerability a "zero-day" bug, meaning it was unpatched, and a threat to anyone with Flash installed.

Later on Tuesday, however, Symantec backtracked from the zero-day label. "Originally, it was believed that this issue was unpatched and unknown, but further technical analysis has revealed that it is very similar to the previously reported Adobe Flash Player Multimedia File Remote Buffer Overflow Vulnerability (BID 28695), discovered by Mark Dowd of IBM," Symantec said.

Even so, Greenbaum maintained yesterday that while the vulnerability wasn't new, the in-the-wild exploit was effective against stand-alone versions of Flash Player 9.0.124.0. "Not all the versions are patched correctly," he said Wednesday.

Today, however, Greenbaum said that Symantec had come to the erroneous conclusion based on tests of the stand-alone Linux version of Flash Player 9.0.124.0. "While testing against the latest [Linux] version, we saw behaviors consistent with a successful exploit that failed to deliver the payload," he explained today. "[But] the exploit was not, in fact, successful against the latest version."

In a follow-up e-mail, a Symantec spokesman spelled it out in more technical detail. "The latest Linux player, when used to open the exploit file, would abruptly exit silently," said the spokesman. "Stack analysis revealed several internally handled segmentation faults, which is not normally desired behavior for a program." That behavior, in fact, is often a sign of a successful exploit that then uses incorrect offsets or payload code, he added.

"Further research was unable to produce a successful full exploitation, and Adobe confirmed that what we had observed was in fact expected and by design," the spokesman said.

For its part, Adobe stuck to its Wednesday claim that the current Flash Player 9.0.124.0 is not vulnerable. "This exploit does not appear to include a new, unpatched vulnerability as has been reported elsewhere," said Adobe spokesman Mark Rozen. "Customers with Flash Player 9.0.124.0 should not be vulnerable to this exploit."

Greenbaum said that spurious results on Windows test systems had also contributed to Symantec's claims that some versions of 9.0.124.0 were at risk. "We were also seeing compromises on the Windows side," he admitted, "on the latest version of Flash that we downloaded from Adobe's site." Later, Symantec's researchers realized that they had not downloaded an additional patch; when they did and retested, they found the Windows edition to be safe.

"We apologize for the confusion," said Greenbaum. But he defended the analysis, noting that changing updates are common in the security trade as researchers spend more time investigating a problem.

Adobe has recommended that Flash users double-check the version they're running and update to 9.0.124.0 if necessary. Adobe maintains a Web page devoted to Flash Player that displays the current plug-in version from any browser. Users, however, must run the check for each installed browser.

Know what? Apple patches 40 security vulnerabilities in Mac OS X

Apple Inc. yesterday patched 40 security vulnerabilities in more than 25 different components and applications bundled with Mac OS X, including Flash Player, iCal and Apache.

The year's third update fixed fewer than half as many flaws as the previous collection, which Apple issued two months ago to plug nearly 90 holes.

Apple tagged 16 of the 40 patches in Wednesday's update with its "arbitrary code execution" phrasing, putting them into the category most other vendors would label "critical."

According to the Security Update 2008-003 advisory, the most-patched components by vulnerability count were Apple's version of the Apache open-source Web server (eight bugs fixed) and the version of Adobe's Flash Player that Apple tucks into Mac OS X (seven flaws patched).

Fixes to Flash Player, said Apple in its Security Update 2008-003 advisory, update the popular multimedia player application to Version 9.0.124.0, the one currently available for download from Adobe itself. Adobe released that version nearly two months ago to patch the same seven vulnerabilities Apple fixed yesterday. Among the seven was one used to claim a $5,000 prize at a hacker challenge in late March.

Coincidentally, earlier versions of Flash Player are currently being exploited by attackers who have hacked legitimate Web sites and are infecting Windows users with a variety of malware.

Also notable in the update was a fix for one of three iCal vulnerabilities that had been disclosed last week by Core Security Technologies. Apple patched the most serious of the trio, marked as CVE-2008-1035, Core's chief technology officer, Ivan Arce, confirmed today. "Yes, I can say that they patched the most serious of the vulnerabilities, but I cannot confirm that they have patched, or haven't patched, the other two."

Core reported the three iCal bugs to Apple in January 2008, and then went public with information about the vulnerabilities last week after it tired of Apple's patch delays. Core's researchers and Apple's security team also disagreed over the severity of the two bugs still unpatched, according to notes Core posted online.

Arce confirmed the disagreements last week in an interview, and mentioned them again today. After several rounds of e-mail messages, he said, Core told Apple that it appeared the two lesser vulnerabilities were "crash-only," and could not be used to inject malicious code. "But that doesn't mean that they're not security bugs," Arce argued last week.

"If you look at our timeline, you'll see that there was some disagreement about whether the two bugs were security bugs," Arce said today. According to that timeline, Apple said it wanted to classify the two vulnerabilities as having "no security-related consequences." Core disagreed.

Arce said Core will be running tests through Friday to see whether Apple added behind-the-scenes patches for the second and third bugs -- possible because Apple may have decided on its own that they are more design flaws, and less security vulnerabilities.

Apple has not replied to e-mails asking if it has fixed the remaining two Core-disclosed vulnerabilities in iCal.

Other patches included in the Wednesday update address vulnerabilities in AppKit, CoreFoundation, the Help Viewer, Image Capture, the Mac kernel, Mail and Single Sign-on. The risks to users run the gamut from the critical "arbitrary code execution" and password exposure to cross-site scripting and denial-of-service attacks.

The majority of the 40 patches apply to both Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) and Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard); separate updates are available for Intel- and PowerPC-based machines, as well as for Mac OS X Server.

Security Update 2008-002 can be downloaded manually from the Apple site, or installed using Mac OS X's integrated update service, though Leopard users won't see the update on the latter, since the security patches have been rolled into the Mac OS X 10.5.3 upgrade released earlier Wednesday.

AGEIA Technologies announces Unreal Tournament 3 PhysX Mod-Kit and exclusive Unreal Engine 3 content - News

Technologies, Inc., the pioneer in hardware-accelerated physics for games, today announced a PhysX Mod-Kit for Unreal Tournament 3 (UT3) that will allow developers and modders to create completely new experiences in the game and customize existing levels to enhance game-play and interactivity. As the engine that drives underlying physics interaction in UT3, PhysX enables dynamic game-play on all systems with additional benefits for PhysX Processor owners. The AGEIA PhysX UT3 Mod-Kit will offer modders everything they need to easily add PhysX-powered content into the UT3 universe. Complementing Epic’s Unreal Engine 3 (UE3) tools that are already deeply integrated with PhysX technology will be additional tools, guides, tutorials and documentation and assets and examples. The PhysX UT3 Mod-Kit will be available for download from AGEIA and distribution partners in December. For more information, visit http://www.ageia.com/physx/ut3.html.
To showcase the power of the PhysX UT3 Mod-Kit and the PhysX processor, AGEIA Technologies is rolling out a series of Extreme PhysX Mod Levels for UT3 available as a free download starting today. The first set of PhysX mods includes the “Tornado” and “LightHouse” levels. The AGEIA Tornado PhysX Mod, which was first revealed at the Leipzig Games Conference earlier this year, features incredible physical realism and revolutionary new environmental impact powered by the PhysX processor. This completely new CTF map is named for the PhysX-powered tornado which tears the battlefield apart as the game progresses. In addition, the tornado actually lures rockets and projectile weapons into its vortex, if fired too close, presenting both dynamic risk and reward to daring players. Complementing Tornado is a new PhysX mod called LightHouse, which introduces an ominous, dungeon-like structure with myriad levels and hidden corridors, featuring a variety of destructible walls, floors and ceilings and new weaponry. Additional maps and mods showcasing other types of PhysX implementations and level morphs will be available soon as part of this ongoing AGEIA Mod-Kit program. The Mods will continue to offer compelling game-play scenarios as well as provide examples of AGEIA PhysX use encouraging modders to produce their own PhysX-driven experiences.

                   md_6804

Together with the recently announced AGEIA Adaptive Physics EXtensions (AGEIA APEX) Development Platform, the PhysX UT3 Mod-Kit provides a comprehensive technology suite to customize UT3. Coupled with great deals on PhysX cards in place for the holiday season and the upcoming UE3-based Warmonger: Operation Downtown Destruction from NetDevil on November 28th, now is the time to get involved in expanding the Unreal experience with PhysX.
We’re excited to be a part of the future of the Unreal Universe. Integrating AGEIA PhysX has never been easier,” said Manju Hegde, CEO of AGEIA Technologies. “Designers and modders can use our powerful PhysX UT3 Mod-Kit and UE3 developers can build on the AGEIA Adaptive Physics EXtensions (APEX) Platform to manipulate physically realistic and interactive worlds in next-generation games – this is what the future of modding and game design is all about.

Europa Universalis: Rome

rome1

Published by: Paradox Interactive
Developed by: Paradox Interactive
Release date: 18th Apr 2008
Genre: TBS

This is the latest addition to the Europa Universalis series developed by Paradox Interactive, a title aiming to be a simplified yet dynamic version of the original game and its sequels. While it is miles away from becoming a popular game for the masses, it is only fair to say that it brilliantly succeeds in cutting down the redundant aspects without losing the depth and complexity that granted this franchise a firm place in the TBS industry.

                rome2

While it lacks medium and long-term goals, just like the previous games in the series, it allows you to choose your own goals and then try to accomplish your mission in a world tormented by conflicts. Depending of your starting nation these may differ from global domination, building up loads of trade routes and forging alliances to a continuous struggle to stay alive and maintain independence at all costs. The clever AI will be more than a challenge during the campaign, both as ally of foe, and if you fail to contain his threat or underestimate him at certain points he is even capable of backstabbing you, by breaking a treaty, if he gets the rights context.

To say that the manual and tutorials are much better than in the previous installments would be an understatement but even so this is a bold endeavor for anyone who is not familiar with the Europa Universalis games. There are still many features that are not explained clear enough in the tutorial and many first timers will be puzzled by the complexity of this game and might even give it up. The province is the cornerstone of your empire and it is ruled by a governor so it is recommended to appoint the right person for this job as his qualities and flaws will have a major impact over the prosperity of the region.

The problem is that if you choose the Roman Empire (and most people will because after all we play Europa Universalis: Rome) you'll have to assign dozens of governors and military leaders for your numerous provinces and legions. Nearly half of the available citizens are corrupted, seriously ill or downright stupid and it doesn't seem too wise to allow them to lead important sectors of your nation. To make things further worse the life expectancy seems to be extremely low, with valuable people dying before 35 so there will be a permanent lack of options in deciding the next governor for your province.

                  rome 3

Major improvements have been made regarding the way the economy functions, it is more intuitive than before and there are just a couple of basic principles you have to master in order to insure a flourishing economy. Trade is everything in Europa Universalis Rome as it is a major source of revenue along with taxes so opening many functional trade routes is paramount. One might find this a bit difficult in the beginning as you lack the infrastructure (roads are later researched) and the reputation to trade with other nations, but it must remain a constant goal throughout the entire campaign.

Nvidia should buy AMD, says analyst

Hoovering up every game technology company in sight to create huge corporations seems to be the latest trend at the moment. AMD has bought ATI, Intel has bought Havok, Nvidia has bought Ageia, and now speculation is building up about Nvidia possibly purchasing AMD.

Doug Freedman from American Technology Research reckons that AMD's shareholders could be pushing for new leadership soon, and that 'One candidate to consider would be Jen-Hsun Huang, who is a serial deliverer with a passion for execution and perfection.'

According to EE Times, Huang has already told Freedman that he wouldn't consider leaving Nvidia to join AMD. However, Freedman reckons that he wouldn't 'walk away from the challenge of buying AMD on the cheap and turning the company around.'

The reason is, of course, because Nvidia is facing an ever-growing threat from Intel since it bought Havok and announced it was going to produce its own discrete graphics part, codenamed Larrabaee. 'The Intel/AMD road-map of integration of the CPU/GPU could pose a risk to Nvidia,' said Freedman, while 'buying AMD propels Nvidia into a formidable competitor for Intel.'

There have been various rumours about potential purchasers of AMD including IBM and Samsung, while others have speculated that Nvidia is developing its own CPU. Whatever is actually happening, Nvidia is certainly going to be increasingly threatened by Intel in the future, and buying AMD could be a way of countering that.

Core member profile pages is a risky but necessary move for the world's second-largest online social network, according to several developers of popular applications for the site.

The move is risky because Facebook will alter the user interface significantly, which can clash against people's natural resistance to change and prompt them to complain.

In addition, for some developers, particularly those new to the platform, the new profile design may limit the visibility of their applications, affecting their ability to build a user base.

"The redesign seems an overall step forward, but it will definitely have speed bumps from an actual implementation standpoint," said Tim O'Shaughnessy, co-founder and CEO of Hungry Machine.

However, with the explosive growth in members and in applications on Facebook, the average member profile interface has become very cluttered, a situation that harms end users and developers alike.

"Facebook is a social [networking] operating system, and the profile is your entry point and your desktop. The utility of that [desktop] interface becomes less and less useful to the end user as it gets more and more cluttered," said Shervin Pishevar, co-founder and CEO of Social Gaming Network. Thus, taking a bold step to clean up the member profile interface is a logical and natural enhancement for Facebook to make, he said.

Facebook has been talking about its redesign for a while, but this week provided concrete details about its plans, which are aimed at retaining the layout's orderly and clean look, a differentiator from competitors like MySpace.

At the heart of the redesign is the redistribution of profile content into different tabs, so that users can better organize components such as the activity feed, photos, personal information and applications. In addition, the activity feed tab will feature a new authoring control panel for creating and posting content called the Publisher Box. Moreover, the profile will have at the top a new horizontal navigation line with drop-down menus for its core features.

"The three main goals we have for this are: to make the profiles simple and clean; to give users control; and to let them emphasize the most recent and relevant content. This is what we've come up with as the best way to accomplish those goals," said Facebook's Mark Slee, product manager of the new design.

Facebook to open source platform?

Of course, any user interface change of this magnitude entails dangers, especially when it will affect about 70 million end users and thousands of application developers. Facebook has experienced backlash from changes in the past, such as the initial versions of its activity feed feature and Beacon advertising program, both of which were criticized for being too intrusive on people's privacy.

"It's a pretty significant redesign, so users will definitely have an adjustment period," O'Shaughnessy said. "People are generally opposed to change, so there'll be a pretty reasonable amount of consternation from users just because it's different."

This is why O'Shaughnessy has been surprised that Facebook is opting to roll out all the changes at once, as opposed to doing it more gradually, since the latter approach might lessen the impact on end users. "It's always a risk to roll out a really big change all at once," he said.

Yet, Slee is confident that the change won't be traumatic for end users, since Facebook has been actively communicating the changes and plans via a Facebook group. Facebook also plans to have a time during which end users will be able to toggle back and forth between the old and new layout, before the change is finalized at some point in June, Slee said.

Windows File Sharing / transfer alternative

Don't think that Windows file sharing is the fastest way of transferring files.

Teracopy Pro (Download NOW!) :

                teracopy-2007-08-08-090301-thumb

It integrates nicely with Windows and can completely replace Explorer's copy and move functions. It lets you copy data faster and much more reliably (it can check md5 and sfv hashes) than Windows file transfer. It can pause and resume transfers, which is handy should you need to free up some resources during a large transfer. Also if there's an error while you're transferring multiple files, it'll retry several times and worst case just skips the problematic file, rather than terminating the entire transfer a la Windows.

  • Copy files faster. TeraCopy uses dynamically adjusted buffers to reduce seek times. Asynchronous copy speeds up file transfer between two physical hard drives.
  • Pause and resume file transfers. Pause copy process at any time to free up system resources and continue with a single click.
  • Error recovery. In case of copy error, TeraCopy will try several times and in the worse case just skips the file, not terminating the entire transfer.
  • Interactive file list. TeraCopy shows failed file transfers and lets you fix the problem and recopy only problem files.
  • Shell integration. TeraCopy can completely replace Explorer copy and move functions, allowing you work with files as usual.
  • Full Unicode support.

Hit News " Future Apple devices may be solar powered"

Apple's patent for integrating solar cells into devices, by placing them under the layers of a touch-sensitive display, could make devices truly portable

Employees at Apple have filed a patent for integrating solar cells into portable devices by placing them underneath the layers of a touch-sensitive display, according to the filing.

Solar power could help make devices truly portable, freeing from the need for wires to connect them to a power supply.

When generating electricity from solar panels, the larger the panel the better -- but as the patent " Solar cells on portable devices " warns, after allowing space for buttons, screens and a way to hold the device, only a small area is left on most devices for solar cells.

One of the ways around that suggested in the patent is to stack a touch-sensitive layer, a display and solar panel on top of one another. That could make Apple's iPhone and iPod Touch good candidates for such a power supply, as the display occupies almost the entire face of those devices.

The use of solar powered charging in portable devices is starting to get more attention, for more immediate consumer use as well.

When Vodafone announced its plan in April to reduce its emissions of the greenhouse gase CO2 by 50 percent by 2020, it also announced plans for solar-powered phone chargers and universal phone chargers for Vodafone-branded handsets.

At the recent ITU Telecom Africa 2008 conference, Ugandan Minister for Communications and Information and Communication Technologies Ham-Mukasa Mulira talked about trials of solar-powered charging conducted there, which had showed promise.

Via releases laptop design as open source

Via Technologies Inc. released the hardware design for a low-cost laptop with WiMax support under an open-source license on Tuesday, a move intended to make customization easier and shorten design cycles for system makers.

The computer-aided design (CAD) files for the OpenBook reference design can be downloaded for free and made available to anyone under the Creative Commons Attribution ShareAlike 3.0 license. The terms of this license allow the CAD files to be freely copied, shared and modified.

The only requirements are that use of the design is attributed to Via and changes made to the design can only be distributed under the same license or one that has similar terms.

"We're hoping we'll get some interesting feedback, and look forward to seeing what the community thinks about this concept," said Richard Brown, vice president of marketing at Via.

The OpenBook is based on Via's 1.6-GHz C7-M processor and VX800 chip set. The design includes an 8.9-in. screen with a resolution of 1,024 pixels by 600 pixels and calls for a hard disk with a capacity of 80GB or more. The basic wireless module included in the design supports Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Optional modules include Assisted GPS (AGPS), WiMax, and support for high-speed cellular networks based on EV-DO, HSPA (High-Speed Packet Access) and WCDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access).

Other features of the 2.2-lb. OpenBook include a full-size keyboard, up to 2GB of DDR (double data rate) memory, a 2-megapixel camera, a memory-card reader and a 4-cell battery that offers up to three hours of life. The laptop is designed to run  Windows Vista, Windows XP or Linux, including G/OS, SUSE Linux and Ubuntu.

The OpenBook design is similar in appearance to Everex's CloudBook Max unveiled at the CTIA Wireless exhibition in April, but the two designs are different, Brown said, pointing to subtle design changes made to suit the requirements of Sprint, which commissioned the CloudBook Max.

Depending on the exact configuration, OpenBook systems will likely cost between $500 to $800, Brown said, adding that the first products will likely hit the market during the third quarter.

Via isn't the first company to release a hardware design as open source. In March, Openmoko Inc., a company set up by Taiwanese hardware maker First International Computer, released an open-source smart phone design, the Neo 1973. The handset, which runs Linux, supports GSM (Global System for Mobile Communication) and GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) networks, and includes Bluetooth and AGPS.

Like Via's OpenBook, the Neo 1973 hardware design was released under a Creative Commons ShareAlike license.

Samsung develops 256GB solid state drive

                samsung-256gb-ssd

High-Performance, Low-Power Storage Device for Mobile PCs is Light, Rugged and Reliable
Samsung's Solid-State Drive (SSD) is an advanced NAND flash-based replacement for traditional hard disk drives, leveraging the company's longtime leadership in memory technology. This next-generation solution offers several advantages over rotating magnetic media such as significantly lower power consumption, remarkable ruggedness, high reliability, less weight and outstanding performance. According to iSuppli, approximately 60% of notebooks will have flash-enabled storage by 2010.

The SSD system includes NAND flash memory, controller, connectors and other elements on a printed circuit board and can fully replace hard drives in notebook, sub-notebook and tablet PCs. Its weight is approximately half that of a conventional hard drive, thus further increasing easy system portability. The device also uses less power — about .5W in operational mode and less than 0.04W in standby mode. In a typical use scenario combining read/write, seek and standby, the SSD requires roughly one-tenth the power of a hard drive. This gives users more than 30 minutes of additional use before a battery charge is needed. The drive comes in PATA and SATA versions in 2.5- and 1.8-inch form factors

Samsung designed the SSD to look like a hard drive from the outside. Inside, it includes NAND flash memory, controller, connectors and other elements on a printed circuit board.

Excellent Read/Write and Boot-up Performance

The performance of Samsung's SSD exceeds that of a similarly sized hard drive by more than 150%. For example, it can read data at a rate of 60MB per second and achieves write speeds of 40MB per second, which is more than twice as fast as comparable hard disk drives. Its speed lets PC users cut boot-up time in half when compared to a conventional 1.8-inch hard drive. As a non-volatile storage device, the SSD has no moving parts such as the motor, disks and heads of a hard drive.

Thus it eliminates spin-up time, seek time and rotational latency while delivering sustained high-speed data transfers. The SSD is also extremely friendly to its surroundings. Its lack of moving parts makes it noise free and its ultra-low power consumption virtually eliminates heat emissions.
The SSD is also highly rugged, standing up to shock and vibration damage while performing in extreme temperatures from -20 to 80 degrees Celsius. These performance features make it well suited to a broad range of environments, including those in the demanding military and industrial areas.

Fully Compatible with Mobile PCsssd
Samsung designed the SSD so that some models look like a hard disk drive from the outside. The host interface is fully compliant with the ATA-7 specification, some ATA-8 commands and supports PIO modes 0-4 and UDMA mode 4 (Ultra DMA 66MHz). The SSD is available in 2.5-inch and 1.8-inch form factors with storage capacities ranging from 4 to 32 gigabytes.

SimCity Societies: Destinations Releases on 23rd of June

             945072_20080520_screen001

If you build it, they will come. That's what EA is hoping for in the upcoming expansion SimCity S ocieties Destinations, in which you'll attempt to build five-star resort cities that attract snooty gourmands, backpacking thrill-seekers, and scantily-clad spring breakers alike. Of course, as tourism booms in your SimCity, you'll need to balance the happiness of the local population with the needs of a large influx of travelers, all with one goal in mind: filling your treasury with simoleans. Cha-ching!

The original SimCity 945072_20080221_screen001Societies attempted to infuse the societal values of The Sims into the city-building and planning of SimCity with mixed results. While it's always fun to force your lowly Sims into submission under the heel of an authoritarian police state, the societal gameplay elements proved a bit too abstract for many, and there was no significant strategy or challenge in shaping your city and values. Destinations looks to hone the gameplay as you focus instead on something we all know and love: vacation.

Whether you surf or ski depends entirely on what terrain you choose, each with its own specific landmarks that you'll have to work around. A tropical island paradise is perfect for water sports but you may have to contend with a volcanic eruption, while a quaint ski town tends to, you know, get cold. We got our hands on Destinations this week and began by building a quaint spiritual enclave in an alpine zone. Increasing the population was simple enough: choose a power source (we went green and chose wind power), build housing for the locals (monasteries, of course), and find them some work. We built some missions and Scientology-inspired temperance centers, and soon the simoleans were rolling in. We could have continued balancing power, housing , and work, but the heart of Destinations is in building tourist venues to attract visitors. For our enclave, we went with a combination of religious altars, an art museum, a bookstore, and a famous grave. To entice travelers to see the sights, we built a few bed-and-breakfasts for accommodations.

You have to spend money to make money in Destinations, and you'll find yourself in a constant cycle of using tax revenue for new venues and accommodations. Soon tourist Sims will flood the city, such as burnouts who have tired of grinding away at the office week after week, professional gamblers, or religious converts and pilgrims. From there you'll have to fulfill their needs by offering appropriate dining, accommodation, and activity options. Backpackers will look for a cheap slice of pizza and a place in a 16-bed room at 945072_20080520_screen006a youth hostel, while high rollers will demand a four-course meal at a four-star restaurant near a luxury hotel room with mints on the pillow. How you cater to the people is, as always in SimCity, entirely up to you.

Back at our spiritual enclave, our city soon became overrun by transient hippies looking for a free ride in our peaceful community. We hate hippies. Despite objections from the local monks, we constructed a police station to up the authority level of our city before the smell of patchouli oil got out of hand. This brings up an interesting point in Destinations. For completely understandable reasons, tourism does not bode well in Orwellian police states. Sure, you can build "colorful" venues like dungeons, jails, and military schools, but for whatever reason the tourists don't seem to appreciate these hotbeds of oppression like we do. It seems that to truly succeed in Destinations you'll need to focus more on creativity, knowledge, spirituality, and prosperity. To see how your Sims are faring, zoom in and click on the little guys to see their thoughts on the city, how much cash they've spent, and even what souvenirs they've purchased.

We've come to appreciate the special abilities that you can trigger in certain venues for a popularity boost. You can set off the local geyser for an amazing aquatic display, trigger a mood-altering device at the behavioral science center to keep the locals in line, and hold a cook-off at the bed-and-breakfast. Fans of SimCity will be happy to know that the disaster menu remains intact should you want to destroy your city in a sudden rush of sadistic omnipotence. After all, power corrupts. In our case, when the hippie population became too much to bear, we simply called upon the Ornithosaurus Wrecks, a giant fire-blowing monster, to stamp out all flower power in our budding utopia. Unfortunately, he took out much of the rest of the city too. Oh, well. We hate hippies.

Destinations will also come packaged with five free game updates already released for SimCity Societies, and we'll have more information as the game is released later this month.

Stronghold Crusader Extreme Coming Soon...

                            944740_99354

Whereas most exp ansions try to, you know, expand upon the core gameplay elements that made the base game popular in the first place, Stronghold Crusader Extreme goes in a slightly different direction: straight uphill. Developer Firefly Studios upped the difficulty in the new Extreme missions to such a terrifying degree that only the most hardcore need apply. But, says Firefly, that's the point.

We got our hands on the new expansion that will also feature the original Stronghold Crusader in addition to the limited edition 944740_20080516_screen001content in addition to the new Extreme trail. That's a lot of content for a six-year-old game, but a solid bargain at only $29.99. That's assuming, of course, you can get past the first mission.

The first stop on the Extreme trail pits you against a malevolent Saracen bent on your destruction. No surprise there. You may be taken aback when a hundred mercenary stone slingers tear your quaint little hamlet apart within the first five minutes while you're simply trying to construct a working dairy farm. We adjusted game speeds. We built walls. We built a rock quarry. We hired slingers of our own, all to no avail. Firefly wants the Extreme content to "provide a stiff challenge to any hardened Crusader player." In that, it has most definitely succeeded.

Thankfully, the original Crusader content provides a nice starting point for new players. You can jump into a peaceful castle creator mode and assemble your own personal Camelot without worry of impending jihad, helping you to master the different resource chains. A skirmish mode teaches you the art of battle as you develop weapons, train a variety of soldiers, and utilize siege tactics like tunneling. There's also a selection of objective-based historical scenarios that act almost as a tutorial for the main single-player mode, the Crusader trail. There, you'll utilize all of your economic and battle strategies to make your way through 50 missions against a number of AI opponents, each employing their own brands of devious tactics.

So far , Crusader Extreme has been a fun challenge. Resource management, strangely, is one of the most interesting aspects of the game as there is a very limited amount of fertile farmland to be found in the arid regions surrounding the Holy Land. The result is something akin to the great Oklahoma land rush, as you 944740_20080423_screen003sprint to claim plots of land before your enemies. As your society grows it will become increasingly difficult to keep the population happy. You'll need to continually increase the food supply to feed your new subjects, so you may need to cut rations. To fund the war effort and conscript highly trained knights and archers, you'll be forced to raise taxes. You can keep the population in line, however, by building a gallows, cesspit, or chopping block in the town square. More benevolent rulers may opt for a communal garden or a dancing bear as positive reinforcement, but where's the fun in that?

We noticed a few minor interface issues. It's particularly tedious to have to construct stairs to a tower that allow your archers to enter. While you're struggling to line up the construction icon just so, your AI opponent is efficiently plotting your demise, not having to deal with any such interface issues.

Visually, Crusader Extreme would be a great-looking game, if this were still 2002. The 2D graphics are definitely dated, but they do not detract at all from the gameplay. Firefly boasts that Crusader Extreme can handle 10,000 units onscreen, and while the result is something like an army of pixelated ants marching toward Jerusalem, it does lend the game an epic feel when battles eventually reach such a grand scale. It's also worth noting that more than one editor has stopped by my desk to comment on the lovely palm trees swaying softly in the wind, an effect that may or may not have inspired the foliage of Crysis. The sound remains a strength, with a fine epic score and effects that complement the action onscreen.

Hardcore players may appreciate the ridicul944740_20080313_screen003 ous challenge of the Extreme mode, but it seems unfair to charge $29.99 for the Extreme trail plus content these players mastered six years ago. On the flip side of the coin, Crusader Extreme is jam-packed with things to do and looks like a solid value for new players. We'll have a full review later this month.
